"Aw, come on Dawn, I wanna play with the teddy !"
Aurora wasn't used to having to beg to get what she wanted, and it showed. Kneeling as she was, hands clasped beneath her chin, staring up mournfully at the blue haired girl -- it was like she had learned to request things from bad romance movies. Her voice, too, had the slightest undertone of a plaintive whine, although it was more likely this was a natural trait rather than something she was putting on.
Dawn, looming dangerously over her, sneering down her delicate little nose at the pleading figure as if such words were falling on deaf ears, wondered if Aurora knew how much fun this little game was. She probably did, considering they were almost identical in every way, but there was always a chance Dawn's acting was better than hers.
Oh, well. Who cared ?
"There's plenty of other toys," Dawn griped, indicating around the room with her free then -- then changing her mind, crossing her arms and clutching the bear possessively to her chest, even turning her figure slightly away to emphasize her point. Aurora's eyes flickered around, skating over the various toys and games strewn about from their extended play time session, before she turned her gaze back to Dawn, cocking her head slightly. For a second there seemed to be a chance she was going to be rational and take the logical way out, then her eyebrows scrunched up and her lips curved down and she came out with --
"But Dawn ! You got to be the doctor last time ! It's my turn nowwww !"
Her eyes welled up too. This wasn't part of their game, not part of their act, and Dawn felt a pang of something -- a twinge about the fact that maybe she really was upsetting her twin half.
It was delicious, she decided, this feeling of power and glee, and grinned triumphantly. Aurora scowled and crossed her arms, saying nothing as Dawn just blew a raspberry at her face and skipped across the room, bear in tow, looking for her -- their -- most favourite toy.
Some time later, with the entire contents of the giant toy chest flung haphazardly in a circle around her, Dawn was forced to admit defeat. Rocking back on her heels, hands clutching the lip of the chest to keep herself from toppling over, she tilted her head curiously as she stared around. There was now, after her monumental effort, nowhere for the toy to be hiding.
And yet, it remained unfound. Hm.
There was a noise behind her. Dawn's eyes narrowed as she considered the implications, then ever so slowly, turned around.
Sure enough, the toy was there. In Aurora's hand. Aurora, for her part, was looking rather smug and trying not to smile. In her other hand, she held a piece of cake.
As Dawn watched, the cake was raised, and she took a little nibble. It was just all too innocent and cute, Dawn wanted to puke.
"Come 'ere !" she cried, lunging forward. There was plenty of time for Aurora to escape but instead of bolting, the blue haired girl just froze, eyes widened almost comically. By the time Dawn realized that she wasn't going to move at all it was too late to correct her course (well, no, it was too late to change her trajectory without injuring herself and that just wasn't going to happen) and --
The crash was probably heard half way across the house. And if it wasn't, then Aurora's cry of pain definitely was. Dawn would have been irritated, but she probably was quite heavy and there were no tears, so it was tolerable to allow her twin half one noise of pain.
Besides, there were more important things to consider. Like the cake smeared across both their faces. Apparently, when faced with inevitable doom, Aurora threw her hands up. This was a fact that needed to have been learned earlier, Dawn brooded.
Aurora smiled sweetly at the expression, unconcerned that she was still pinned on the bottom, and reached up to swipe a glob of icing from Dawn's face. Dawn rolled her eyes and huffed, hopping off and waving one finger at the other.
"That was gross !"
"You shouldn't have lunged for me !"
Both remembering what the entire situation started over, looked to the side, at the toy. By no small chance, it was now sitting right on top of the teddy. They looked at each, looked at it, tensed and prepared to bolt --
"... Maybe we could both be doctors ?" Aurora ventured hesitantly, finally seeing sense and realizing that if such a feud was to continue, she would lose. Badly. Dawn hadn't figured that point out yet.
"... Alright ..." she conceded, warily staring at the blue haired girl, smiling cheerfully and like nothing was wrong. Dawn watched her frolic to the toys, pick them up, and skip over to where they could both sit in a clean area of floor, all the while absently licking icing and cake crumbs from her face.
Normally they would clean up first, but as soon as the teddy hit the floor and Aurora turned with the toy in hand, all thoughts of such trivial matters fled both their minds. There was the familiar promise of a thrill bubbling deep inside, and with every step that Dawn took towards the scene the faint hum of promised satisfaction grew into a cacophony and all thoughts of their misunderstanding and arguing and conflict melted away, until it was impossible to hear anything but the pounding of her own heart and she was incapable of seeing anything but the glint of fading sunlight off the toy as Aurora held it poised over the teddy.
Dawn's breath, almost catching in her throat, hitched as she clasped her fingers over the one holding the toy, only dimly hearing the answering noise from Aurora.
They both breathed softly, watching as the toy drew closer to the teddy, eyes widened in identical expressions of childish excitement.
"One day we'll be doctors for real," whispered Aurora, not even realizing she had spoken.
Yes thought Dawn.
And then the scalpel sliced through the soft cloth, and words didn't seem important at all.
